Back to overview/Shop floor control

Measure the floor from the floor.

Work order execution at the work centre — operator clock-on, output, scrap, rework and reason-coded downtime — producing OEE, labour hours and actual cost as a by-product of doing the work.

The problem

Production data collected on paper and typed in the next morning is not control, it is history. By the time the shift report is legible, the shift is over and the decision it would have informed is past.

OEE is only useful when its three components are separable: availability, performance and quality each have a different owner and a different fix.

Core workflow

Release to completion.

01
Release
Work order and routing pushed to the work centre.
02
Clock-on
Operator and machine identified, time starts.
03
Production
Good quantity, scrap and rework recorded as made.
04
Downtime
Stops reason-coded — breakdown, changeover, material.
05
Quality
In-process checks recorded against the operation.
06
Completion
Put to stock, cost posted, OEE updated.
