Standard Odoo is a strong business backbone for a clinic or hospital group: accounting, purchasing, inventory, HR and reporting. It is not a clinical system. A UAE provider also needs patient records, clinical scheduling, orders and results, insurance claims, and connections to the health authority platforms. That healthcare layer is what Ventrecs, the connected healthcare platform built by Al Jawad on Odoo, provides.
What does a clinic or hospital need, and where does standard Odoo stop?
| Need | Standard Odoo | What a healthcare layer adds |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting, VAT, payables, receivables | Covered | Posting from clinical billing, insurer receivables |
| Purchasing and inventory | Covered | Batch and expiry tracking, dispensing, recall control for medicines |
| HR and payroll | Covered | Clinical rosters and credentials by role |
| Patient records | Contacts only | A clinical record: encounters, notes, orders, results, medication history |
| Appointments | A general calendar | Clinical scheduling by clinician, room and service |
| Billing and insurance | Invoicing | Payers and plans, coverage, pre-authorisation, claims, remittance |
| Laboratory and imaging | Not covered | Orders, specimens, results, instrument interfaces, reporting |
Which UAE platforms does a provider have to plan for?
The UAE has no single national platform for health data. A provider usually meets two kinds of exchange: clinical exchange, which shares a patient's record between facilities, and claims exchange, which carries eligibility, prior authorisation, claims and remittance between providers and payers.
| Platform | Where | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| Malaffi | Abu Dhabi | Clinical data exchange, for the Department of Health |
| NABIDH | Dubai | Clinical data exchange, run by the Dubai Health Authority |
| Riayati | Federal | The Ministry of Health and Prevention's national unified medical record programme |
| Shafafiya | Abu Dhabi | Claims, prior authorisations and remittance |
| DHPO and eClaimLink | Dubai | Claims, prior authorisation, remittance and electronic prescriptions |
Onboarding is per licensed facility, so a connection built for one facility is not automatically valid for another. Diagnoses, procedures and medicines are coded to lists the authorities publish, such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, CDT and the Dubai Drug Code. Read the detail in Ventrecs' guides to UAE healthcare interoperability and UAE e-claims.
How do we approach compliance?
We keep the clinical system separate from the exchange. The hospital system records the events and claim data. A governed integration layer maps them to each authority's published specification and delivers them with retry, a transaction log and reconciliation. Each connection is scoped per project for the facility and the authority, and tested in the environment that authority provides. We do not claim a live connection or an approval by default.
Where does Odoo fit well in a healthcare group?
- Finance, VAT and consolidation across clinics and entities.
- Procurement and central stores for medicines and consumables.
- HR, rosters and training records.
- Management reporting across branches.
What should you decide first?
- Which licensed facilities you operate, and the authority and platform each one connects to.
- Who owns each clinical exchange and each claims platform.
- Which parts of your process are common across the group and which differ by emirate.
- Whether you are replacing a hospital system, extending one, or adding a business backbone to it.
Frequently asked questions
Can Odoo run a clinic on its own?
Not clinically. Odoo can run the finance, purchasing, inventory and HR of a clinic. Patient records, clinical orders and insurance claims need a healthcare layer on top.
What is Ventrecs?
Ventrecs is the connected healthcare platform built by Al Jawad on Odoo. It covers the clinical, pharmacy, laboratory, imaging, insurance and operations workflows of providers. Visit ventrecs.com.
Does a facility connect to Malaffi or NABIDH once for the whole country?
No. Each licensed facility onboards with the authority that licenses it, and Abu Dhabi and Dubai run separate exchanges and claims platforms.
Do national e-claim formats come built in?
The claim lifecycle is built in. The country-specific formats for Shafafiya and DHPO are scoped per project and tested with the authority's environment.
